Background
Kinetic Engineering was established by H. K. Firodia, an industrialist who had earlier been associated with the founding of Automobile Products of India and the Bajaj-Tempo enterprise. The company began operations focused on the manufacture of small-capacity two-wheelers aimed at the Indian mass market, and later diversified into precision automotive components.
History
KEL gained wide recognition with the Luna moped, introduced in the early 1970s, which became one of the most widely used personal mobility products in India during the 1970s and 1980s. The Luna brand was marketed with the tagline "Chal Meri Luna" and is regarded as a defining product of the Indian moped era.
In 1984, the Firodia family entered into a joint venture with the Japanese manufacturer Honda Motor Co. to form Kinetic Honda Motor Limited, which manufactured the Kinetic Honda variomatic scooter. The joint venture was eventually restructured, with Honda exiting and the operations becoming part of the Kinetic Group as Kinetic Motor Company Limited. In 2008, the two-wheeler business of Kinetic Motor was acquired by Mahindra & Mahindra through a joint venture, later consolidated into Mahindra Two Wheelers.
Following the divestment of the two-wheeler business, Kinetic Engineering Limited refocused on its components business, manufacturing gears, transmissions, shafts, and other precision automotive parts for original equipment manufacturers in India and abroad.
Operations
The company operates manufacturing facilities in Maharashtra, with capabilities in forging, machining, gear cutting, heat treatment, and assembly of transmission systems. It supplies components to two-wheeler, three-wheeler, passenger car, and commercial vehicle manufacturers.
Significance
Kinetic Engineering is regarded as a notable name in Indian automotive history for its role in democratising personal motorised transport through the Luna moped, and for being among the early Indian companies to enter a technical collaboration with a Japanese major in the scooter segment. The Firodia family, through KEL and its associated entities, has been a long-standing presence in the Pune automotive cluster.
