Overview

Government Kilpauk Medical College (GKMC) is a government medical institution located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Founded in 1960, the college is affiliated to The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, and offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in medicine.

The college is associated with the Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, along with four other attached hospitals: Government Royapettah Hospital, Government Thiruvotteeswarar Hospital of Thoracic Medicine, Government Peripheral Hospital at K. K. Nagar, and Government Peripheral Hospital at Anna Nagar. Together, these institutions support the college's teaching, training and patient-care functions.

The Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital is the third in the government sector in the state, after the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and the Government Royapettah Hospital, to operate a full-fledged emergency department. The department is organised in line with the Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency Care Initiative (TAEI) guidelines, and includes a triage area, a resuscitation bay and colour-coded zones for prioritising cases by severity.

The hospital is recognised as a level II trauma care centre. Its zero-delay ward, which is intended to ensure prompt attention to incoming emergencies, receives an average of 40 to 50 cases each day.
