Background

The Khaja Education Society, the sponsoring body of the university, has run educational institutions in Kalaburagi for several decades, including a medical college, a dental college and institutes for engineering, management and information technology. These institutions were brought together under the umbrella of a unitary private university by an Act of the Karnataka Legislature, leading to the establishment of Khaja Bandanawaz University as a state private university.

The campus is situated in close proximity to the dargah complex of Khwaja Bandanawaz Gesu Daraz, a Chishti Sufi saint who settled in the Bahmani capital of Gulbarga in the late 14th century. The saint's shrine has long been a significant centre of pilgrimage and learning in the Deccan, and the educational society draws its identity from this cultural and spiritual legacy.

Academics

The university operates through constituent faculties and colleges that offer programmes in:

  • Medicine and allied health sciences
  • Dentistry
  • Engineering and technology
  • Computer applications and information technology
  • Management studies
  • Law
  • Education
  • Arts, humanities and social sciences

The Faculty of Medical Sciences includes the Khaja Bandanawaz Institute of Medical Sciences, which is associated with a teaching hospital serving the Kalyana-Karnataka region.

Significance

As one of the private universities serving the Kalyana-Karnataka (Hyderabad-Karnataka) region, KBNU contributes to higher education access in a part of the state that has historically lagged in educational and economic indicators and which is covered under Article 371J of the Constitution of India for special development provisions. Its location in Kalaburagi, a major district headquarters, places it among the principal higher-education institutions in northern Karnataka, alongside Gulbarga University and Central University of Karnataka.
