Background
The firm traces its origins to the legal practice established by Debi Prasad Khaitan, a noted lawyer and one of the members of the drafting committee associated with the founding of the Indian National Congress era's legal scholarship, in Kolkata. Over the decades, Khaitan & Co expanded from its early Calcutta (now Kolkata) base into a multi-office firm with offices in Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chennai and Singapore.
Practice and structure
Khaitan & Co operates as a partnership and is organised into specialist practice groups. It advises on cross-border mergers and acquisitions, private equity transactions, securities offerings, banking transactions, restructuring, regulatory matters and litigation before Indian courts and tribunals, including the Supreme Court of India, various High Courts, the National Company Law Tribunal and arbitration forums.
Clients
The firm's clientele includes Indian conglomerates, multinational corporations, financial institutions, government bodies, public sector undertakings and start-ups. It also works closely with leading international law firms on India-related matters, given that foreign law firms are not permitted to practise Indian law domestically.
Significance
Khaitan & Co is regularly ranked among the leading Indian law firms by international legal directories. It has been involved in advising on a number of significant Indian corporate transactions and regulatory matters, and is regarded as part of the traditional cohort of major Indian law firms alongside other long-established practices.
