Background
The district lies in the western part of Chhattisgarh, in the region historically associated with the princely state of Khairagarh. Khairagarh town is widely known as the seat of Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya, one of the earliest universities in Asia dedicated exclusively to music and the fine arts, established in 1956. Chhuikhadan and Gandai were also seats of small former princely estates and serve as local administrative and market centres.
Formation
The district was announced as part of a series of administrative reorganisations in Chhattisgarh aimed at bringing governance closer to citizens by creating smaller units from larger districts. It was constituted from tehsils previously under Rajnandgaon district. Following its creation, Rajnandgaon was reduced in extent, while Khairagarh-Chhuikhadan-Gandai gained its own collectorate and superintendent of police.
Geography
The district forms part of the Chhattisgarh plain, with undulating terrain along its western edges where the land rises towards the Maikal hills and the border with Madhya Pradesh. The economy of the area is predominantly agrarian, with paddy as the dominant crop, supplemented by pulses and oilseeds. Forested tracts in the western tehsils support tendu leaf collection and other minor forest produce.
Administration
The district is headed by a Collector and District Magistrate, with a Superintendent of Police responsible for law and order. It is divided into tehsils and development blocks corresponding to the towns of Khairagarh, Chhuikhadan and Gandai, along with associated rural areas.
Culture and significance
Khairagarh's identity as a centre of classical music and dance gives the district a distinctive cultural profile within Chhattisgarh. The Indira Kala Sangit Vishwavidyalaya draws students from across India and abroad, and the town hosts associated cultural events. Local fairs, temples and the legacies of the former princely houses of Khairagarh and Chhuikhadan contribute to the district's heritage.
