Background
Maharaj began his senior cricketing career in South Africa's domestic system at a young age, making his first-class debut for KwaZulu-Natal in 2006. He developed primarily as a specialist spinner, a relatively rare profile for a South African Test cricketer, where pace bowling has traditionally dominated.
Career
Domestic cricket
Maharaj has long been associated with cricket in the KwaZulu-Natal region, representing the Dolphins in domestic competitions. With the launch of the SA20 league, he played for Durban's Super Giants before going on to captain the Pretoria Capitals in the same competition.
International cricket
Maharaj made his Test debut for South Africa in November 2016 and went on to establish himself as the side's leading frontline spinner across formats.
In June 2021, during a Test match against the West Indies, Maharaj became the second bowler from South Africa to take a hat-trick in Test cricket. A few months later, in September 2021, he captained South Africa for the first time in an ODI, in a series against Sri Lanka. In the same month, he made his T20I debut, also against Sri Lanka, leading the side in his debut match.
2025 ICC World Test Championship
Maharaj was a member of the South African team that won the 2025 ICC World Test Championship final. The triumph was the second ICC title won by South Africa.
