Kerala Urban Road Transport Corporation

Overview

The Kerala Urban Road Transport Corporation (KURTC) is a public sector bus transport operator in the Indian state of Kerala. It functions as a city-services wing under the broader umbrella of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), and is tasked with running urban and suburban bus services in Kerala's principal cities, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode.

Background

Public bus transport in Kerala has historically been operated by KSRTC, which was constituted in its present form in 1965 after the reorganisation of the earlier Travancore State Transport Department. As cities in Kerala expanded and dedicated city-bus operations grew in scale — particularly with the induction of JNNURM-funded low-floor and semi-low-floor urban buses — a separate operational identity was created to manage these services. KURTC was set up as a distinct wing of KSRTC for this purpose.

Operations

KURTC primarily operates city services within and around Kerala's larger urban agglomerations. Its fleet includes air-conditioned and non air-conditioned low-floor buses procured under central government urban transport funding programmes, alongside conventional city buses. Services are organised around city bus depots and terminals located in:

  • Thiruvananthapuram, the state capital, where KURTC operates extensive city and suburban routes.
  • Kochi, where KURTC services act as feeder and trunk routes complementing the Kochi Metro.
  • Kozhikode and other northern Kerala cities, where it runs urban and short-distance services.

Many KURTC buses are deployed on intra-city routes, airport connectivity, and short inter-city corridors that fall within urban catchment areas.

Significance

KURTC plays a role in providing organised public transport in Kerala's cities, which face high population density along the coastal urban corridor. By concentrating low-floor and accessible buses under a dedicated urban wing, the corporation contributes to last-mile connectivity for metro and rail users, particularly in the Kochi region, and supports state government objectives on reducing private vehicle dependence in urban areas.
