Kenia Jayantilal

Overview

Kenia Jayantilal is a former Indian first-class cricketer. He is best remembered for being selected in the India Test squad for the historic 1971 tour of the West Indies under Ajit Wadekar, although he did not play a Test match on the tour. His career was largely associated with Hyderabad in domestic cricket.

Background

Jayantilal emerged through the Hyderabad cricket set-up, which during his era produced a number of nationally recognised players. He was identified as a promising top-order batsman in the Ranji Trophy circuit, earning attention from national selectors towards the end of the 1960s and into the early 1970s.

Career

Domestic cricket

Jayantilal represented Hyderabad in the Ranji Trophy, India's premier first-class domestic competition. He also featured in zonal cricket in the South Zone, contributing as a specialist batsman.

India selection

His most prominent achievement was being chosen in the Indian squad for the 1970–71 series in the West Indies, a tour that became a landmark in Indian cricket history with India recording its first-ever series win in the Caribbean. Jayantilal was part of the touring party but did not feature in the playing eleven for any Test of the series, with the Indian top order being anchored by Sunil Gavaskar, Ashok Mankad and Dilip Sardesai.

Significance

Jayantilal's career is an example of the depth of Indian batting talent in the early 1970s, when several capable domestic performers were on the fringes of the national side. His inclusion in the West Indies squad places him within the chronology of one of Indian cricket's most celebrated tours, even though he did not earn a Test cap.
