Background

Kekri is a historic town in central Rajasthan, long known as a trading and agricultural centre. Before its elevation, the Kekri tehsil functioned as a sub-divisional unit of Ajmer district. The decision to upgrade Kekri to a full district followed a wider exercise undertaken by the Rajasthan government to create smaller, more manageable administrative units intended to bring governance closer to citizens and to ease the workload of existing district administrations.

Formation

The creation of Kekri district was part of an announcement by the state government to reorganise Rajasthan into a larger number of districts. Under this reorganisation, several tehsils across the state were upgraded into independent districts, each headed by a District Collector and a Superintendent of Police, with the standard apparatus of revenue, police and development administration.

Geography

The district lies in the central plateau region of Rajasthan, in terrain characterised by undulating plains and patches of low hills associated with the eastern fringes of the Aravalli Range. The local economy is predominantly agrarian, with crops typical of semi-arid central Rajasthan, supplemented by trade activity centred on Kekri town.

Administration

As a district of Rajasthan, Kekri falls under the administrative oversight of the Ajmer division. Routine administration is organised through tehsils and sub-divisions, with panchayat samitis at the block level and gram panchayats at the village level forming the rural local government structure.

Significance

The formation of Kekri district is significant as it reflects ongoing administrative restructuring in Rajasthan aimed at decentralising governance. For residents of the area, district status brings local access to senior revenue, police, and development offices that were previously available only at Ajmer.
