Career

Entry into cinema

After establishing herself in theatre, Ponnamma transitioned to Malayalam films. Although still in her early twenties, she was cast in mature, often maternal, roles. At the age of 20, she played the mother of senior actors Sathyan and Madhu in Thommente Makkal (1965), an early role that set the template for much of her subsequent screen work.

Range of work

Beyond films, Ponnamma acted in television serials and in commercials. She also has playback singing credits in a small number of films, expanding her contribution beyond performance on screen.

The "mother" persona

Often described as the "mother to all actors", Ponnamma played the mother of nearly every leading Malayalam actor of her era. Her portrayals of the mother of Mohanlal in particular drew critical acclaim and became a defining strand of her filmography.

Awards and recognition

  • Kerala State Film Award for Second Best Actress – won on four occasions.

Significance

Ponnamma's longevity, prolific output and consistent casting in maternal roles made her a recurring presence across generations of Malayalam cinema. Her ability to anchor family-centred narratives, alongside both senior actors such as Sathyan and Madhu and later stars such as Mohanlal, gave her a distinctive place in the industry's history of character actors.
