Karthi (born Karthik Sivakumar; 25 May 1977) is an Indian actor who works predominantly in Tamil cinema. The younger son of veteran Tamil actor Sivakumar and the younger brother of actor Suriya, he made his acting debut in 2007 with Selvaraghavan's Paruthiveeran, a role that earned him several major awards including the Filmfare Award for Best Tamil Actor and a Special Mention at the National Film Awards.

Background and education
Karthi was born into a Tamil family with deep roots in cinema. His father Sivakumar is a well-known character actor of Tamil films, and his elder brother Suriya is a leading Tamil actor. Karthi completed his schooling in Chennai and went on to study mechanical engineering at Crescent Engineering College, Chennai. He later pursued a master's degree in industrial engineering in the United States.
Before turning to acting, Karthi worked as an assistant director under filmmaker Mani Ratnam during the production of Aayutha Ezhuthu (2004), an experience he has often credited as his formal training in cinema.
Career
Debut and early work (2007–2010)
Karthi made his lead debut in Paruthiveeran (2007), directed by Ameer Sultan, playing a rustic anti-hero in a rural Tamil Nadu setting. The film was a critical and commercial success, and Karthi received the Filmfare Best Actor (Tamil) award along with a National Film Award Special Mention for his performance.
He followed this with Aayirathil Oruvan (2010), a fantasy adventure directed by Selvaraghavan, and Paiyaa (2010), a road-romance directed by N. Linguswamy that became a major commercial success.
Established career (2011–2018)
Karthi appeared in a range of films during this period, including Naan Mahaan Alla (2010), Siruthai (2011), Saguni (2012), Alex Pandian (2013), Madras (2014) directed by Pa. Ranjith, Komban (2015), Thozha / Oopiri (2016, bilingual Tamil–Telugu), Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru (2017), and Kadaikutty Singam (2018). Madras and Theeran were particularly noted for their craft and earned him further critical recognition.
Recent work (2019–present)
Karthi played Periya Vembu Marudhu in Mani Ratnam's two-part historical epic Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022) and Ponniyin Selvan: II (2023), based on Kalki Krishnamurthy's novel, where his portrayal of Vanthiyathevan was widely appreciated. He also led the action thriller Kaithi (2019), directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, which became a notable commercial success and is part of the director's Lokesh Cinematic Universe. Other notable releases include Sulthan (2021), Viruman (2022), and Japan (2023).
Other activities
Karthi is a co-founder of the Uzhavan Foundation (also known as the AGAM Foundation in some contexts), an initiative supporting farmers in Tamil Nadu through awareness and welfare programmes. He has frequently spoken on agricultural issues and rural livelihoods in public forums.
Personal life
Karthi married Ranjani, a software engineer, in 2011. The couple has two children. The family resides in Chennai.
