Overview
Karnataka Veterinary, Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (KVAFSU) is a public university in the state of Karnataka, India, with its headquarters in the Bidar district. It was established through an Act of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly passed on 10 February 2004, with the objective of overseeing education and regulation in the fields of veterinary, animal and fisheries sciences in the state.
At the time of its formation, as many as 21 allied institutions—including colleges, research stations, veterinary hospitals and farms—along with their employees were transferred to the new university. The constituent veterinary and dairy institutions include the Veterinary College, Bangalore; the Colleges of Veterinary Science & Animal Husbandry at Shimoga and Hassan; the Veterinary College, Bidar; the Veterinary College Hospital, Hebbal; the Dairy Science College, Bangalore; the Rural Veterinary Hospital at Yelahanka; and the District Veterinary Hospital, Bidar, formerly under the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Department.
Fisheries institutions brought under the university include the College of Fisheries at Mangalore, Fisheries Research Stations at Hesaraghatta and Ankola, and Fish Seed Production farms at Munirabad and Shivapura in Koppal district. Other affiliated establishments include the Institute of Animal Health and Veterinary Biologicals, Bangalore; the livestock farm at Hesaraghatta; the Livestock Breeding and Training Centre at Kurikuppe in Bellary; the Devani Cattle Breeding Station at Hallikhed, Bidar; the Killar Breeding Station at Arabhavi; the Sheep Breeding centre at Bandoor, Malavalli; the Main Research Station, Hebbal; the Agriculture Research Stations at Mangalore and Nagamangala; and the Zonal Agriculture Research Station at Konnehally, Tiptur.
