Background
KSRTC traces its origins to the transport services operated under the erstwhile princely state of Mysore. After the reorganisation of states in 1956 and the formation of Mysore State (later renamed Karnataka in 1973), the road transport undertaking was reconstituted as a corporation under the Road Transport Corporations Act, 1950. It was renamed Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation following the state's renaming.
Structure and subsidiaries
To improve operational efficiency and decentralise management, KSRTC has been split over time into several regional corporations, each operating in a defined geographical zone of Karnataka:
- Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC), which took over city services in Bengaluru.
- North Western Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC), headquartered in Hubballi.
- Kalyana Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (KKRTC), formerly known as North Eastern Karnataka Road Transport Corporation, headquartered in Kalaburagi.
KSRTC itself continues to operate services from a large number of depots and divisions, primarily covering southern and central Karnataka and inter-state services.
Services
KSRTC operates a wide range of bus services catering to different passenger segments, including ordinary and express services, semi-luxury and luxury inter-city coaches, sleeper and Volvo air-conditioned services, and inter-state premium brands. Notable service brands operated by the corporation have included:
- Rajahamsa – semi-deluxe service.
- Karnataka Sarige – ordinary mofussil service.
- Airavat – air-conditioned Volvo and Mercedes-Benz services.
- Ambari – multi-axle sleeper service.
- Vajra and Vayu Vajra – associated with metropolitan and airport services under BMTC.
The corporation operates inter-state services to destinations in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Kerala, Maharashtra and Goa.
Recognition
KSRTC has received multiple national-level awards from the Government of India and industry bodies for fuel efficiency, kilometre operation, and safe driving among state transport undertakings. It was also among the early state corporations in India to introduce online reservation and electronic ticketing for inter-city services through its Awatar ticketing platform.
Significance
As one of the largest state transport undertakings in India, KSRTC plays a central role in providing affordable mobility across Karnataka, linking rural areas to towns and cities, and supporting tourism, pilgrimage and labour migration within the state and to adjoining regions. It has frequently been cited as a model for operational performance among Indian STUs.
