Overview
KMF functions as the apex marketing and coordinating body for milk producers' cooperative unions across the districts of Karnataka. It procures milk from village-level dairy cooperative societies through district milk unions, processes it at union dairies, and markets liquid milk and value-added dairy products under the Nandini brand. The federation operates on the three-tier Anand Pattern of cooperative organisation popularised by the National Dairy Development Board.
Background
Organised dairying in Karnataka was reshaped under Operation Flood, the dairy development programme launched by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) in 1970. The programme aimed to replicate the Anand model of dairy cooperatives, in which farmers own and control the procurement, processing and marketing chain.
History
The Karnataka Dairy Development Corporation was established in the 1970s to implement Operation Flood in the state. With the consolidation of dairy cooperative unions in subsequent years, the Karnataka Cooperative Milk Producers' Federation was formed as the apex body to oversee marketing and policy coordination among the district unions. The Nandini brand was introduced for the federation's range of milk and milk products and has since become the dominant dairy brand in Karnataka.
Structure
KMF follows a three-tier cooperative structure:
- Village level: Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS), where individual milk producers are members.
- District level: Milk Producers' Cooperative Unions, which procure from DCS, process milk and manufacture products.
- State level: The Karnataka Milk Federation, which handles marketing, branding, technical support, and inter-union coordination.
Products
Under the Nandini brand, KMF markets a wide range of dairy products, including:
- Liquid milk in multiple variants
- Curd, buttermilk and lassi
- Ghee and butter
- Paneer and cheese
- Ice cream and flavoured milk
- Sweets such as Mysore Pak and peda
- Skimmed milk powder and other milk powders
Significance
KMF is a major economic institution in rural Karnataka, providing a steady source of income to lakhs of farmer members through daily milk procurement. The Government of Karnataka has, at various times, provided incentives to dairy farmers supplying milk to the cooperative network. The Nandini brand commands a strong market presence in Karnataka, particularly in Bengaluru, and competes with national and regional dairy brands in liquid milk and value-added segments.
