Overview
Karnatak University (KUD) is a public state university located in Dharwad, Karnataka, India. It was officially established in 1950 under the Karnatak University Act, 1949, which was passed by the legislature of the then Bombay Province. The institution is the second-oldest university in the state of Karnataka, after the University of Mysore.
Until the 1980s, Karnatak University's jurisdiction extended across most parts of Karnataka, covering the districts of Dharwad, Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Vijayapura, Kalaburagi, Raichur, Bidar and Ballari. Between 1953 and 1965, the Manipal Institute of Technology and Kasturba Medical College in Manipal were also affiliated with the university. With the subsequent bifurcation of districts and the establishment of newer universities in the region, KUD's territorial jurisdiction has been reduced to the present-day districts of Dharwad, Gadag and Uttara Kannada.
The university is recognised under the "University with Potential for Excellence" scheme of the University Grants Commission. In 2022, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) accredited Karnatak University with an 'A' grade, assigning it a CGPA of 3.13.
