Background
The film is rooted in Bhuta Kola, a traditional ritual performance practised in the coastal Karnataka districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, in which a performer is believed to be possessed by a regional deity and acts as a medium between villagers and the divine. The narrative also draws on themes of land rights, tensions between forest dwellers and government authorities, and the relationship between local communities and protected forests.
Rishab Shetty has stated that the story was inspired by stories he heard during his upbringing in Keradi, a village in the Kundapura taluk of Udupi district. The title Kantara is a Sanskrit-derived word meaning "mystical forest".
Plot summary
Set across multiple time periods beginning in 1847, the film follows the relationship between a village in coastal Karnataka and the deity Panjurli, worshipped through Bhuta Kola. In the present day, Shiva, a Kambala buffalo-race champion, comes into conflict with a Deputy Range Forest Officer, Murali, over the demarcation of reserved forest land, and with a local landlord whose family has long-standing ties to the village deity. The conflict culminates in a climactic ritual sequence that reaffirms the village's ancestral pact with the divine guardian of the forest.
Production
Principal photography took place largely on location in coastal Karnataka, including in and around Kundapura, Keradi and the forests of the Western Ghats. The film's climactic Bhuta Kola sequence, performed by Rishab Shetty, was widely noted for its intensity and was choreographed in consultation with traditional ritual performers. The soundtrack, composed by B. Ajaneesh Loknath, made extensive use of regional folk instruments; the song Varaha Roopam became particularly popular.
Release and reception
Released theatrically on 30 September 2022 in Kannada, the film was later dubbed and released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam in October 2022, expanding its reach across India. It received widespread critical acclaim for its direction, performance, music, cinematography and grounding in regional culture. The film was a major commercial success, drawing audiences well beyond traditional Kannada cinema markets and emerging as one of the standout Indian films of 2022.
It was streamed on Amazon Prime Video following its theatrical run, with separate availability for the Kannada and Hindi versions on different platforms.
Awards and recognition
At the 70th National Film Awards, Kantara received the Best Feature Film in Kannada and the Best Actor award for Rishab Shetty, alongside additional technical recognition.
