Overview

Kannur University is a multi-campus public university in the state of Kerala, India, established to support the development of higher education in the northern Malabar region. It serves the revenue districts of Kasaragod and Kannur, along with the Mananthavady Taluk of the Wayanad district.

The university traces its origins to an ordinance issued by the Governor of Kerala on 9 November 1995, under which an institution named "Malabar University" was first brought into existence. It was subsequently established in its present form in 1996 through Act No. 22 of 1996 of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. The university was formally inaugurated on 2 March 1996 by E. K. Nayanar, the then Chief Minister of Kerala.

The Kannur University Act, 1996 set out the objective of constituting a teaching, residential and affiliating university in Kerala to provide for the development of higher education in the Kasaragod and Kannur revenue districts and the Mananthavady Taluk of the Wayanad district. As an affiliating university, it links a network of colleges across this region with its central administrative and academic framework.

Kannur University functions as a multi-campus institution, with campuses located at Kannur, Kasaragod, Mananthavady, Payyannur, Mangattuparamba, Thalassery, Nileshwaram and Manjeshwaram. This distributed structure is intended to extend access to higher education across the North Malabar region, covering both coastal and hilly areas of northern Kerala.
