Kane Stuart Williamson (born 8 August 1990) is a New Zealand international cricketer and a former captain of the New Zealand national team. A right-handed top-order batsman and occasional off-spin bowler, he is the leading run-scorer for New Zealand in Test cricket and is widely regarded as one of the finest contemporary batsmen as well as among the greatest New Zealand batsmen and captains of all time.

Background and early career

Williamson made his first-class cricket debut in December 2007, while still a schoolboy at Tauranga Boys' College. The same year, he made his Under-19 debut against the touring India U-19 side. He was subsequently named captain of the New Zealand U-19 team for the 2008 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup.

International career

Williamson made his senior international debut for New Zealand in 2010. He has represented New Zealand at the Cricket World Cup editions of 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023, and at the ICC World Twenty20 editions of 2012, 2014, 2016, 2021, 2022 and 2024.

Captaincy

He made his full-time captaincy debut during the 2016 ICC World Twenty20 in India. As captain, he led New Zealand to the final of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, where he was named Player of the Tournament. He had earlier been part of the New Zealand squad that finished as runners-up at the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

In June 2021, Williamson captained New Zealand to victory in the inaugural ICC World Test Championship final — the team's first ICC trophy since the 2000 ICC KnockOut Trophy. In November 2021, he led New Zealand to the final of the ICC T20 World Cup. He was also part of the New Zealand squad that finished as runners-up at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Recognition and significance

Williamson is the leading run-scorer for New Zealand in Test cricket. He was the only New Zealander named in the ICC Test Team of the Decade (2011–2020), and was nominated for the Sir Garfield Sobers Award for ICC Male Cricketer of the Decade as well as for the Test Cricketer of the Decade award.

Former Australian captain Ian Chappell and the late New Zealand batsman Martin Crowe have ranked Williamson among the top four Test batsmen of the current era, alongside Joe Root, Steve Smith and Virat Kohli. Crowe described Williamson as the dawn of "probably our greatest ever batsman".
