Background

Born Uma Kashyap on 24 February 1927, she adopted the screen name Kamini Kaushal at the start of her film career in the mid-1940s.

Career

Early breakthrough (1946–1950s)

Kaushal made her film debut with Chetan Anand's Neecha Nagar (1946), which won the Palme d'Or at the 1946 Cannes Film Festival. She quickly established herself as a leading actress with films such as Do Bhai (1947), Shaheed (1948), Nadiya Ke Paar (1948), Ziddi (1948), Shabnam (1949), Paras (1949), Namoona (1949) and Arzoo (1950).

Through the 1950s she continued in lead roles in Jhanjar (1953), Biraj Bahu (1954), Aabroo (1956), Bade Sarkar (1957), Jailor (1958) and Night Club (1958). Her performance in Bimal Roy's Biraj Bahu (1954) won her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in 1956.

Transition to character roles (1963 onwards)

Kaushal played her last lead heroine role in Godaan (1963), and from 1963 onwards she moved to character roles. She received critical acclaim for her performance in Shaheed (1965). She appeared in eight films with Manoj Kumar — Shaheed (1965), Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Paschim (1970), Shor (1972), Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974), Sanyasi (1975), Dus Numbri (1976) and Santosh (1989).

She also worked in three Rajesh Khanna films — Do Raaste (1969), Prem Nagar (1974) and Maha Chor (1976) — and starred opposite Sanjeev Kumar in Anhonee (1973).

Later years (1990s–2022)

From the 1990s, Kaushal appeared in films only sporadically. She returned to wide audiences with Rohit Shetty's Chennai Express (2013) and Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Kabir Singh (2019), both among the highest-grossing Indian films. For Kabir Singh, she won the Screen Award for Best Supporting Actress and received a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her final screen appearance was a cameo in Laal Singh Chaddha (2022).

Significance

Kaushal's career bridged the formative years of post-Independence Hindi cinema and the contemporary commercial industry. Her debut film Neecha Nagar remains the only Indian film to have won the Palme d'Or at Cannes, and her work in Biraj Bahu is regarded as a landmark in the portrayal of women in 1950s Hindi cinema. Her enduring association with filmmaker-actor Manoj Kumar contributed to several patriotic and socially themed films of the late 1960s and 1970s.
