Background
The college belongs to the broad category of self-financing engineering institutions that emerged in Tamil Nadu as part of the wider expansion of technical education in southern India. These institutions complemented the older government and aided engineering colleges by widening access to professional courses in fields such as civil, mechanical, electrical, electronics and computer engineering. Like many such institutions, KCET was set up by an educational trust with the objective of imparting technical education to students from the surrounding districts, especially those from rural and semi-urban backgrounds.
The institution is named after Kumaraswami Kamaraj, popularly known as "Perunthalaivar" Kamaraj, who is associated with the expansion of school education in Tamil Nadu, including initiatives such as the noon-meal scheme. Several educational institutions across the state carry his name in recognition of his contribution to public education.
Academics
KCET offers Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) and Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) programmes across core and applied branches of engineering. Postgraduate programmes typically include Master of Engineering (M.E.) or Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in selected specialisations, along with management programmes such as the Master of Business Administration (MBA) where offered. Curricula, syllabi and examinations are governed by the affiliating university, while internal assessments, laboratory work and project supervision are handled by the college faculty.
Typical departments at engineering colleges of this nature include:
- Civil Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Electrical and Electronics Engineering
- Electronics and Communication Engineering
- Computer Science and Engineering
- Information Technology
- Science and Humanities, supporting first-year and allied subjects
The departments handle theory classes, practical sessions, mini and major projects, industrial visits, and student seminars. Many departments also operate professional society chapters affiliated to bodies such as the Institution of Engineers (India), the Indian Society for Technical Education (ISTE), and the Computer Society of India (CSI).
Campus and facilities
The campus houses academic blocks for the various departments, laboratories and workshops, a central library, computing facilities, seminar halls and an administrative block. Common student facilities generally include hostels for men and women, a canteen, sports grounds, indoor games rooms, transport services connecting the campus to nearby towns, and basic medical assistance. Co-curricular spaces such as auditoriums and open-air theatres are used for technical symposia, cultural events and guest lectures.
Admissions
Admissions to undergraduate engineering programmes follow the centralised counselling process for engineering admissions in Tamil Nadu, conducted on the basis of Higher Secondary (Plus Two) marks and the state's reservation policy. Lateral entry admissions to the second year of B.E./B.Tech. programmes are open to diploma holders through the corresponding state counselling. Postgraduate admissions are based on entrance examinations and counselling procedures notified by the relevant state authority. A share of seats is filled under the management quota as permitted by regulations governing self-financing institutions.
Student life
Student activities at KCET revolve around departmental associations, technical clubs, cultural committees and sports teams. Annual technical symposia and cultural festivals provide a platform for paper presentations, project exhibitions, coding contests, robotics events and inter-collegiate cultural competitions. National Service Scheme (NSS) units and similar bodies organise blood donation camps, village outreach programmes and awareness drives. Placement and training cells coordinate aptitude training
