Background
In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Indian civil aviation was served by a number of privately operated airlines, often regionally focused and operating with small fleets of piston-engined aircraft inherited or purchased in the wake of the Second World War. Calcutta, with Dum Dum aerodrome as one of the busiest airports in the subcontinent, was a major base for several such operators. Kalinga Airlines was among the smaller scheduled carriers headquartered in the city.
Context within Indian aviation
The Government of India enacted the Air Corporations Act, 1953, which nationalised scheduled air transport in the country. Under the Act, the assets and operations of the existing private scheduled airlines were merged into two new state-owned corporations: Indian Airlines, which took over domestic services, and Air India, which continued international operations. The nationalisation effectively ended the era of independent private scheduled carriers, of which Kalinga Airlines was a part.
Significance
Although a minor operator, Kalinga Airlines is part of the historical record of post-Independence private aviation in India, a period characterised by a fragmented industry of regional carriers that was consolidated through the 1953 nationalisation. References to such smaller carriers are useful in tracing the evolution of civil aviation in eastern India and the lineage of operations later absorbed into Indian Airlines.
