Plot
Vidya Bagchi, a heavily pregnant software engineer, arrives in Kolkata from London in search of her missing husband, Arnab Bagchi. With the help of a sympathetic young police officer, Satyoki "Rana" Sinha, she investigates leads at the National Data Centre and an old guesthouse. Her search draws her into the orbit of an Intelligence Bureau operation linked to a past poison gas attack on the Kolkata Metro, an enigmatic IB officer named Khan, and a contract killer known as Bob Biswas. The narrative culminates in a twist that recontextualises the protagonist's motives and identity against the symbolism of Durga Puja.
Production
The film was shot largely on location in Kolkata, often using guerrilla-style filming during the actual Durga Puja festivities. Sujoy Ghosh chose to shoot with handheld cameras and small crews to capture authentic crowds, narrow lanes of north Kolkata, and the city's tram and metro systems. Many supporting roles were filled by local Bengali theatre and film actors, contributing to the film's regional texture. The script went through multiple drafts, and the production was made on a relatively modest budget, reportedly under ₹10 crore.
Music
The soundtrack was composed by Vishal–Shekhar with lyrics by Vishal Dadlani, Sandeep Srivastava and others. The track Ekla Cholo Re, a Rabindranath Tagore composition, was rendered by Amitabh Bachchan and became one of the most discussed elements of the film, weaving Bengali cultural identity into the narrative.
Release and Reception
Kahaani opened to strong critical acclaim, with particular praise for Vidya Balan's central performance, Sujoy Ghosh's direction, and the screenplay's restraint. The film performed well at the box office, becoming one of the highest-grossing female-led Hindi films of its time and demonstrating the commercial viability of content-driven cinema with a woman protagonist.
Awards
The film received several major honours at Indian award ceremonies in 2013:
- National Film Awards: Best Actress for Vidya Balan (alongside her work in The Dirty Picture); Best Screenplay (Original) for Sujoy Ghosh and Advaita Kala.
- Filmfare Awards: Best Director for Sujoy Ghosh; Best Actress (Critics) for Vidya Balan, among other nominations.
- Recognition at Screen Awards, IIFA Awards, and Producers Guild Film Awards.
Significance
Within Hindi cinema of the early 2010s, Kahaani is regarded as part of a wave of mid-budget, urban-set thrillers that prioritised tight writing over star-driven spectacle. It contributed to the broader recognition of female-led Hindi films as commercially bankable, and to Vidya Balan's standing as a leading actress of the period. The film is also frequently cited for its evocative use of Kolkata as both setting and thematic device, with Durga Puja iconography mirroring the protagonist's arc.
Sequel and Franchise
Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh, also directed by Sujoy Ghosh and starring Vidya Balan with Arjun Rampal, was released on 2 December 2016. While sharing the franchise name and director, it functions as a standalone story with a different plot and characters.
