Background and early career
Kabir Khan studied at the Mass Communication Research Centre (MCRC) at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi. He started his career as a cinematographer and documentary filmmaker, working on a number of non-fiction projects shot across conflict zones and politically sensitive regions, including Afghanistan and parts of Central and South Asia. His early documentary work, including a project on the Indian National Army, later informed his interest in war, displacement and identity as recurring themes.
Film career
Debut and early films
Kabir Khan made his feature directorial debut with Kabul Express (2006), produced under the Yash Raj Films banner. Set in post-Taliban Afghanistan and partly shot on location there, the film followed two Indian journalists travelling through the country and was noted for its semi-documentary approach drawn from the director's own reporting experience.
His next film, New York (2009), starred John Abraham, Katrina Kaif and Neil Nitin Mukesh. It dealt with the experiences of South Asian Muslims in the United States in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks and was a commercial success, establishing Kabir Khan as a director able to combine mainstream stars with politically charged subject matter.
Commercial successes
Ek Tha Tiger (2012), produced by Yash Raj Films, paired Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif as agents of Indian and Pakistani intelligence agencies. The film became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of its year and began a continuing collaboration between Kabir Khan and Salman Khan.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), starring Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Harshaali Malhotra, told the story of an Indian devotee of Hanuman who tries to return a mute Pakistani girl to her family. The film was a major box-office success in India and overseas, and was widely discussed for its treatment of India–Pakistan relations through a humanist lens.
The same year, Kabir Khan directed Phantom (2015), a thriller starring Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif, based on a novel by Hussain Zaidi and centred on a covert operation following the 26/11 Mumbai attacks.
Tubelight (2017), again with Salman Khan, was set against the backdrop of the 1962 Sino-Indian War and was an Indian adaptation inspired by the American film Little Boy.
Recent work
In 2020, Kabir Khan created and directed the web series The Forgotten Army – Azaadi ke liye for Amazon Prime Video, dramatising the story of Subhas Chandra Bose's Indian National Army. The project drew on documentary work he had undertaken on the same subject earlier in his career.
He directed 83 (2021), a sports drama based on the Indian cricket team's victory at the 1983 Cricket World Cup, with Ranveer Singh in the role of captain Kapil Dev. The film received positive critical reviews for its recreation of the tournament and its ensemble portrayal of the squad.
Themes and style
Kabir Khan's films frequently engage with cross-border conflict, terrorism, espionage and the lives of South Asians caught between national and religious identities. His background in documentary is reflected in location shooting in countries such as Afghanistan, Cuba, Turkey, Ireland and Greece, and in narratives that integrate real political contexts into commercial Hindi cinema. Several of his films have explicitly explored India–Pakistan relations from a humanist standpoint.
Personal life
Kabir Khan is married to television presenter and actor Mini Mathur. The couple have two children and are based in Mumbai.
