Background
The institution traces its origin to KL College of Engineering, which was established by the Koneru Lakshmaiah Charities as a self-financing engineering college affiliated to a state university in Andhra Pradesh. Over time, the college expanded its academic offerings beyond core engineering disciplines to include programmes in business administration, pharmacy, architecture, law, and the basic sciences.
The university is named after Koneru Lakshmaiah, the educationist and founder associated with the Koneru Lakshmaiah Charities, the trust that sponsors the institution.

KL College of Engineering was conferred deemed-to-be university status by the Government of India under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956, on the recommendation of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
