Overview
KGF: Chapter 1 is a 2018 Indian Kannada-language period action film written and directed by Prashanth Neel, and produced by Vijay Kiragandur under the banner Hombale Films. The film stars Yash in the lead role as Rocky, a man who rises from poverty in Bombay to become a feared figure controlling the gold mines of Kolar Gold Fields. The supporting cast includes Srinidhi Shetty, Ramachandra Raju, Achyuth Kumar, Malavika Avinash, Ananth Nag, B. Suresha and Vasishta N. Simha.
The title "KGF" refers to the Kolar Gold Fields, a mining region in Karnataka that historically supplied much of India's gold. The film is the first instalment of a two-part saga, followed by KGF: Chapter 2 in 2022. It was released simultaneously in Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, Hindi and Malayalam, becoming one of the earliest large-scale pan-Indian releases from the Kannada film industry.

Plot background
The narrative is structured as a story-within-a-story, framed through the recollections of journalist Anand Ingalagi, whose banned book El Dorado chronicles the rise of Rocky and the empire built around the Kolar gold mines. The film opens in the early 1950s and traces Rocky's journey from the slums of Bombay to a position of dominance within a criminal syndicate operating the mines, where bonded labourers are forced to extract gold under brutal conditions.
Production
Principal photography was carried out across multiple locations in Karnataka, with the mining sequences shot at recreated and existing sites associated with the Kolar Gold Fields region. Bhuvan Gowda served as the director of photography, employing a desaturated, sepia-tinged palette to evoke the period setting. The score and songs were composed by Ravi Basrur, whose long collaboration with Prashanth Neel began on the director's earlier film Ugramm.
The film was made on a budget that was substantial for a Kannada production at the time, and was conceived from the outset as a two-part saga, with portions of Chapter 2 filmed alongside the first instalment.
Release and reception
KGF: Chapter 1 was released on 21 December 2018, clashing in theatres with the Hindi film Zero. The Hindi-dubbed version, distributed by Anil Thadani's AA Films, performed strongly at the North Indian box office, helping the film achieve nationwide commercial success. It became one of the highest-grossing Kannada films at the time of release and significantly expanded the reach of Sandalwood productions in markets beyond Karnataka.
Critics offered mixed-to-positive reviews, with praise directed at the visual scale, Yash's screen presence, the production design and Ravi Basrur's background score, while some reviewers noted the non-linear narrative as demanding. The film won two National Film Awards at the 66th National Film Awards: Best Action Direction and Best Special Effects.
Music
The soundtrack album, composed by Ravi Basrur, includes tracks such as "Salaam Rocky Bhai", "Dheera Dheera" and "Gali Gali" (in the Hindi version). The music was released by Lahari Music in Kannada, and by separate labels for the dubbed versions. The songs and the recurring score motifs became widely popular and helped publicise the film in non-Kannada markets ahead of release.
Significance
KGF: Chapter 1 is widely regarded as a turning point for the Kannada film industry, demonstrating that a Kannada-originated film could be marketed and consumed as a pan-Indian theatrical event. Its success contributed to a broader trend in late-2010s and early-2020س Indian cinema, in which films from southern industries achieved major commercial returns in Hindi-speaking markets. The film also brought wider recognition to director Prashanth Neel, actor Yash, and the Hombale Films banner, which subsequently produced other large-scale projects including Kantara.
