Background

The company traces its origins to Kamani Engineering Corporation, an enterprise associated with the Kamani family, which became one of India's earliest manufacturers of lattice steel transmission towers. Following financial difficulties at the original Kamani Engineering Corporation, the transmission tower business was reorganised, and the entity later came under the control of the RPG Group led by the Goenka family. It was subsequently renamed KEC International Limited and refocused on global EPC contracting.

Operations

KEC's principal business is the turnkey execution of high-voltage power transmission lines and substations. Its tower manufacturing facilities supply lattice steel structures used by utilities and grid operators across multiple continents. Over time, the company has diversified into adjacent infrastructure segments:

  • Power Transmission & Distribution: EPC of overhead transmission lines, substations and underground cabling.
  • Railways: Track laying, electrification, signalling, telecommunication and station works for Indian Railways and metro projects.
  • Civil: Industrial buildings, residential projects and water infrastructure.
  • Urban Infrastructure: Including overhead equipment for metro rail systems.
  • Cables: Power, instrumentation, control and telecom cables.
  • Solar: EPC of utility-scale solar photovoltaic plants.
  • Oil & Gas Pipelines: Cross-country pipeline laying and associated terminal works.

Acquisitions and global presence

KEC expanded internationally through both organic growth and acquisitions. The acquisition of SAE Towers, a transmission tower manufacturer with operations in the Americas, gave the company production facilities in Brazil, Mexico and the United States, and strengthened its position in the western hemisphere. KEC also operates manufacturing units in India and executes projects across South Asia, Central Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Southeast Asia and the Americas.

Corporate structure

KEC International is part of the RPG Group, the diversified Indian conglomerate founded by Rama Prasad Goenka. The group's leadership has overseen KEC's transformation from a domestic manufacturer into a multinational EPC contractor. The company's shares are listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange of India.

Significance

As a long-standing supplier of transmission infrastructure, KEC International has played a notable role in the build-out of electricity grids in India and several developing economies. Its diversification into railways, solar and pipelines aligns it with India's broader infrastructure investment programmes, and its overseas footprint makes it one of the more globally active Indian EPC firms in the power sector.
