Background

She grew up in Hyderabad, where she took up badminton at a young age and trained under the well-known coach S. M. Arif at the Lal Bahadur Stadium. Her early grounding under Arif shaped her doubles game, which became her primary discipline at the senior level.
Career
Domestic dominance
Gutta won the senior national women's doubles title a record number of times, dominating the domestic circuit through the 2000s and into the 2010s. She also won multiple national mixed doubles titles, partnering players such as V. Diju.
International women's doubles
Her most successful international partnership was with Ashwini Ponnappa. The pair won the women's doubles gold medal at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, defeating the Malaysian pair in the final. At the 2011 BWF World Championships in London, Gutta and Ponnappa won the bronze medal in women's doubles, becoming the first Indian pair to win a medal in that event at the World Championships.
The duo also won bronze at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and represented India at the 2012 London Olympics and the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Mixed doubles
In mixed doubles, Gutta partnered V. Diju with considerable success. The pair reached a career-high BWF world ranking inside the top 10, won several Grand Prix-level titles on the international circuit and were finalists at multiple international opens.
