Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao Jr., popularly known as Jr NTR or NTR Jr., is an Indian actor who works primarily in Telugu cinema. Recognised for his performances combining dialogue delivery, dance, and action, he is among the highest-paid actors in the Telugu film industry. He is the grandson of N. T. Rama Rao, the veteran actor and former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

Background and Early Life

Jr NTR was born into the Nandamuri family, one of the most prominent families in Telugu cinema and politics. His father, Nandamuri Harikrishna, was an actor and politician, and his grandfather N. T. Rama Rao was a leading figure of Telugu cinema and the founder of the Telugu Desam Party. He has elder and younger siblings, including the actor Nandamuri Kalyan Ram. He completed his schooling at the Hyderabad Public School and later pursued higher education in Hyderabad.

He made his screen debut as a child artist in Brahmarshi Viswamitra (1991), directed by and starring his grandfather. He subsequently appeared in Ramayanam (1996), in which he played the role of Rama; the film won the National Film Award for Best Children's Film.

Film Career

Debut as Lead Actor (2001–2003)

Jr NTR's first lead role came with Ninnu Choodalani (2001), but it was Student No. 1 (2001), directed by S. S. Rajamouli, that brought him recognition. The collaboration with Rajamouli continued with Simhadri (2003), a major commercial success that established him as a leading actor. Other early successes included Aadi (2002), directed by V. V. Vinayak, and Subbu (2002).

Rise in the 2000s

Over the following years he featured in films such as Naa Alludu (2005), Ashok (2006), Rakhi (2006), and Yamadonga (2007), the last directed by Rajamouli. Kantri (2008) and Adhurs (2010) reinforced his standing in mass-oriented cinema.

2010s

The 2010s saw a series of commercial hits including Brindavanam (2010), Oosaravelli (2011), Baadshah (2013), Temper (2015) directed by Puri Jagannadh, Nannaku Prematho (2016) directed by Sukumar, Janatha Garage (2016) directed by Koratala Siva, Jai Lava Kusa (2017) in which he played triple roles, and Aravinda Sametha Veera Raghava (2018) directed by Trivikram Srinivas.

RRR and Wider Recognition

In 2022, Jr NTR played Komaram Bheem in S. S. Rajamouli's RRR, alongside Ram Charan. The film became one of the highest-grossing Indian films and gained significant international attention. The song "Naatu Naatu" from the film, picturised on Jr NTR and Ram Charan, won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 95th Academy Awards. The film and his performance brought him recognition beyond Indian-language cinema.

Recent Work

His subsequent projects include Devara: Part 1 (2024), directed by Koratala Siva, and an upcoming film with director Prashanth Neel.

Television

Jr NTR hosted the Telugu version of the reality television series Bigg Boss in its first season (2017) on Star Maa.

Personal Life

He married Lakshmi Pranathi in May 2011 in Hyderabad. The couple has two sons. He has generally maintained distance from active politics, although members of his extended family have been associated with the Telugu Desam Party.
