Geography
Jogbani lies in the northern part of Araria district in the Kosi–Mahananda plains of north-eastern Bihar. The town is located on the Indo-Nepal border and is contiguous with Biratnagar, the largest industrial city in eastern Nepal. The terrain is flat alluvial plain, typical of the Tarai belt, and the area is drained by tributaries of the Kosi river system.
Border crossing and trade
The Jogbani–Biratnagar crossing is one of the designated land customs points along the open Indo-Nepal border. It handles a significant volume of bilateral trade and third-country cargo destined for Nepal, with customs and immigration facilities maintained on the Indian side. To improve infrastructure and reduce congestion, an Integrated Check Post (ICP) was developed at Jogbani by the Land Ports Authority of India, providing facilities for customs clearance, immigration, warehousing and parking for commercial vehicles.
Transport
Rail
Jogbani is the terminus of a branch line on the Katihar division of the East Central Railway. The Jogbani railway station connects the town to Katihar and onwards to other major cities. The metre-gauge line in this region was converted to broad gauge as part of the Indian Railways gauge conversion programme, enabling direct long-distance services from Jogbani to destinations in other parts of India.
Road
The town is connected by road to Forbesganj, Araria and Purnia. National and state highways in Araria district link Jogbani with the wider road network of Bihar, while a road crossing connects it to Biratnagar across the border.
Administration
Jogbani is administered as an urban local body within Araria district. Local civic functions are handled by the notified area authority, while law and order, customs, immigration and border-related matters fall under the relevant central and state agencies, including the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), which guards the Indo-Nepal border.
Economy
The local economy is shaped by its position as a border town. Trade, transport, warehousing, customs-related services and small-scale retail form important sources of livelihood. Agriculture in the surrounding rural areas, including paddy, jute, maize and pulses, also feeds into local markets. Cross-border movement of goods and labour links Jogbani closely with the industrial economy of Biratnagar.
Significance
Jogbani's importance derives from its role as a gateway between India and eastern Nepal. It is one of the few rail-linked border points on the Indo-Nepal frontier, making it strategically relevant for both passenger movement and freight. The town is frequently mentioned in the context of Indo-Nepal relations, customs cooperation and infrastructure projects aimed at easing border trade.
