Overview
Jodhpur Gramin district is a district in the state of Rajasthan, India. It was created as part of the reorganisation of districts in Rajasthan announced by the state government in 2023, when several new districts were carved out of existing ones to improve administrative reach. Jodhpur Gramin was formed by separating the rural areas surrounding the city of Jodhpur from the parent Jodhpur district, with the urban core continuing to constitute the Jodhpur district.

Background
The Government of Rajasthan, under Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, announced the creation of nineteen new districts in March 2023 on the recommendations of a committee headed by retired IAS officer Ram Lubhaya. The reorganisation was intended to bring administrative offices closer to citizens in geographically large districts. Jodhpur, one of the largest districts in Rajasthan by area, was bifurcated into Jodhpur (covering the city and immediate urban areas) and Jodhpur Gramin (covering the surrounding rural tehsils).
Geography
The district lies in the Marwar region of western Rajasthan, on the eastern fringe of the Thar Desert. The terrain is largely arid to semi-arid, with sandy plains, scrub vegetation and seasonal watercourses. The economy of the rural areas is dominated by agriculture and livestock rearing, with crops such as bajra (pearl millet), moth, moong and guar, alongside cattle, sheep, goat and camel husbandry.
Administration
The district is part of the Jodhpur division. Like other Rajasthan districts, it is headed by a District Collector and Magistrate, with a Superintendent of Police responsible for law and order. Administrative subdivisions comprise tehsils and sub-tehsils carved from the rural portions of the former undivided Jodhpur district.
Status
In late 2024, the Rajasthan government under Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma reviewed the districts created by the previous administration. As part of this review, several of the newly notified districts were scrapped while others were retained. The status of Jodhpur Gramin and similarly named twin districts was reassessed during this exercise, and administrative arrangements were adjusted accordingly.
Significance
The creation of Jodhpur Gramin reflected a wider trend in Rajasthan and other large Indian states of subdividing populous and territorially extensive districts to improve governance, land revenue administration, policing and the delivery of welfare schemes in rural blocks distant from district headquarters.
