Background

Jessop & Company traces its origins to the early nineteenth century in Bengal during the British colonial period, when it began as an engineering workshop catering to the growing demand for industrial and infrastructure equipment in eastern India. Over the decades, it expanded into the manufacture of structural steel, bridge girders, railway rolling stock, and material-handling equipment, becoming one of the principal suppliers to Indian Railways and to public works projects.

Operations

The company's manufacturing facilities have been concentrated in the industrial belt around Kolkata, with major works at Dum Dum. Its product range has historically included:

  • Railway wagons of various types, including specialised wagons for Indian Railways.
  • Passenger and electric multiple unit (EMU) coaches.
  • Cranes, including road-mobile and rail-mounted cranes used in construction and railway maintenance.
  • Fabricated steel structures, including bridge girders and industrial structures.

Public sector phase

In the post-independence period, Jessop & Company was brought under government ownership and operated for many years as a public sector undertaking. It was subsequently placed under the Bharat Bhari Udyog Nigam Limited (BBUNL) group of heavy engineering companies. The firm was later disinvested and passed into private hands as part of the disinvestment programme of the Government of India.

Significance

As one of the earliest engineering enterprises established in India, Jessop & Company occupies an important place in the country's industrial history. Its contributions to railway rolling stock and structural engineering have linked it closely with the expansion of the Indian railway network and with public infrastructure projects in eastern India. The firm is frequently cited in studies of the industrial heritage of Kolkata and of the heavy engineering sector in West Bengal.
