Background

Rodrigues was born and raised in Bhandup, a suburb of Mumbai, in a Maharashtrian Roman Catholic family. Her father, Ivan Rodrigues, a former physical education teacher and amateur cricketer, played a significant role in her early cricket training. She picked up the sport at a young age and trained alongside boys at local maidans in Mumbai, which is widely credited with shaping her attacking approach to batting.

In addition to cricket, Rodrigues represented Maharashtra in junior-level field hockey before choosing to focus on cricket. She studied at St. Joseph's Convent High School in Bhandup.

Domestic career

Rodrigues rose through Mumbai's age-group ranks and made her senior domestic debut for Mumbai in the Women's Senior One Day Trophy. In October 2018, she scored an unbeaten double hundred (202*) for Mumbai against Saurashtra in a Senior Women's One Day League match, becoming one of the youngest players to register a double century in Indian women's domestic cricket.

She has also played franchise cricket abroad, including stints in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) in Australia with the Melbourne Renegades and Northern Superchargers in The Hundred in England, gaining exposure to varied conditions.

Women's Premier League

In the inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL) auction held in February 2023, Rodrigues was bought by Delhi Capitals. She has been a key middle-order batter for the franchise since the league's launch.

International career

Rodrigues made her T20 International debut for India in February 2018 against South Africa, and her ODI debut shortly thereafter the same year. She quickly established herself in India's white-ball setup, scoring her maiden ODI half-century early in her career and earning recognition as one of the most promising young batters in the world.

She made her Test debut for India in the multi-format series against England in 2021, becoming part of a new generation of Indian women cricketers playing across formats. She has since featured in further Tests, including matches against Australia and England.

Rodrigues has been a regular member of India's squads at major ICC events, including the ICC Women's T20 World Cup and the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup, and at the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, where India won the silver medal in women's cricket. She also represented India at the Asian Games 2022 in Hangzhou, where India won the gold medal in women's cricket.

Playing style

Rodrigues is a top- and middle-order batter known for her wristy stroke play, ability to manipulate the field, and quick running between the wickets. She plays the sweep and the cut effectively and is regarded as a strong player of spin. She bowls right-arm off-spin occasionally as a part-time option.

Significance

Rodrigues is considered among the leading figures of the post-2017 generation of Indian women cricketers, alongside contemporaries such as Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, and Richa Ghosh. Her performances in domestic cricket as a teenager, her early international success, and her presence in overseas franchise leagues have contributed to the growing professional profile of women's cricket in India.
