Overview

Jayasurya (born 31 August 1978) is an Indian actor, film producer, playback singer, and impressionist who works predominantly in Malayalam cinema. Beginning his career as a mimicry artist and television host, he has appeared in more than 100 films, winning a National Film Award, three Kerala State Film Awards, and two Filmfare Awards South, among other honours.

Background

Jayasurya started out as a mimicry artist and hosted several television programmes on Malayalam channels before venturing into films. He made his on-screen debut as a junior artist in the 1995 film Three Men Army, and went on to play his first lead role in Oomappenninu Uriyadappayyan (2002).

2000s: comic and antagonist roles

Through the 2000s, Jayasurya became popular for comedy-driven performances in films such as Swapnakkoodu (2003), Pulival Kalyanam (2003), Chathikkatha Chanthu (2004), Chocolate (2007), Kerala Cafe (2009) and Gulumaal (2009). During the same period, he played antagonists in Classmates (2006), Arabikkatha (2007) and Kangaroo (2007), and later in 5 Sundarikal (2013).

2010s: critical acclaim

In the 2010s, Jayasurya was recognised for performance-driven roles in films including Cocktail (2010), Janapriyan (2011), Beautiful (2011), Trivandrum Lodge (2012), Apothecary (2014), Iyobinte Pusthakam (2014), Lukka Chuppi (2015), Su.. Su... Sudhi Vathmeekam (2015) and Captain (2018). He continued to appear in successful comedies such as Punyalan Agarbattis (2013), Amar Akbar Anthony (2015), Aadu (2015) and Aadu 2 (2017).

Production and playback singing

Jayasurya made his debut as a producer by co-producing Punyalan Agarbattis, and is also credited as a playback singer in a few films. He has additionally worked in a handful of Tamil films.
