Ravi was born into a film family. His father, Mohan, is a Tamil film editor, and his elder brother, Mohan Raja (credited as M. Raja), is a screenwriter and director. The siblings began their careers together with Jayam, a Tamil remake of the Telugu film of the same name, which established Ravi as a lead actor and Raja as a director in Tamil cinema. Early career (2003–2007)
Following Jayam, Ravi appeared in a number of youth-oriented romantic and action films, including M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi (2004) and Unakkum Enakkum (2006), both directed by his brother. These films, along with Something Something Unakkum Enakkum (2006), a Telugu-Tamil bilingual, helped him establish a base audience among younger viewers.
Commercial consolidation (2008–2014)
Ravi's profile rose with Santosh Subramaniam (2008), the Tamil remake of the Telugu hit Bommarillu, again directed by M. Raja. Thani Oruvan (2015), directed by M. Raja, is widely considered a turning point in Ravi's career. The investigative thriller, in which he played an IPS officer opposite Arvind Swami's antagonist, was both a commercial success and well received critically. Ravi played the role of Arulmozhivarman, the future Chola emperor Rajaraja I, in Mani Ratnam's two-part historical epic Ponniyin Selvan: I (2022) and Ponniyin Selvan: II (2023), based on the novel by Kalki Krishnamurthy. The films featured an ensemble cast including Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Karthi, Trisha and Jayam Ravi, and were among the highest-grossing Tamil productions of their release years.
