Background
The university traces its origins to institutions associated with the former Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU) system in Andhra Pradesh. The constituent units, namely the School of Planning and Architecture and the College of Fine Arts, had operated for decades as part of JNTU Hyderabad before being reorganised into a separate, specialised university focused on the built environment and the visual arts.
The decision to constitute a dedicated university was taken by the Government of Andhra Pradesh, recognising the distinct academic character of architecture, planning, and fine arts education and the need for an autonomous institutional framework. After the formation of Telangana in 2014, the university came under the jurisdiction of the Government of Telangana.
Academic structure
The university is organised around its core constituent schools and colleges, which broadly include:
- School of Architecture
- School of Planning
- College of Fine Arts
Programmes typically offered include the Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch), Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), and various Master's programmes in architecture, planning, and the fine arts, along with doctoral research in these fields. Admission to professional architecture courses is through nationally recognised entrance examinations, while fine arts admissions follow the procedures laid down by the university and the state government.
Campus and location
The university's principal facilities are situated in Hyderabad, the joint capital region historically shared with Andhra Pradesh and currently the capital of Telangana. The location places the institution within a large metropolitan area with a long architectural heritage that includes Qutb Shahi, Asaf Jahi, and modern building traditions, providing a rich context for studio and field work.
Significance
JNAFAU is significant as one of the small group of universities in India devoted exclusively to architecture, planning, and the visual arts. By operating outside the framework of a general technical or arts university, it provides a focused environment for design pedagogy, urban research, conservation studies, and studio-based artistic training relevant to Telangana and the wider Deccan region.
