Background
Bumrah was born into a Sikh family in Ahmedabad. He lost his father, Jasbir Singh, at an early age, and was raised by his mother, Daljit Kaur, a school principal. He took up cricket as a child and developed his distinctive bowling action largely on his own, without significant early formal coaching at the elite level. He came up through age-group cricket in Gujarat before progressing to the senior state side.
Domestic and franchise career
Bumrah made his first-class debut for Gujarat in the Ranji Trophy during the 2013–14 season. He was part of the Gujarat side that won the Ranji Trophy in 2016–17, the state's first such title.
In the Indian Premier League (IPL), he was signed by the Mumbai Indians in 2013 and has remained with the franchise. He has been a key member of multiple IPL title-winning Mumbai Indians squads and is widely considered one of the most successful death-overs bowlers in the league's history.
International career
Limited-overs cricket
Bumrah made his One Day International and Twenty20 International debuts on India's tour of Australia in January 2016. He quickly established himself as a specialist death bowler, relying on yorkers, slower balls and a hard-to-pick action. He has been a regular member of India's squads in ICC events, including the ICC Cricket World Cup and the ICC Men's T20 World Cup.
He was a leading member of the Indian squad that won the 2024 ICC Men's T20 World Cup in the West Indies and United States, where his bowling in the powerplay and death overs was central to India's campaign. He was named Player of the Tournament.
Test cricket
Bumrah made his Test debut against South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town, in January 2018. He became the first Asian fast bowler to take a five-wicket haul in Test matches in South Africa, England, Australia and the West Indies. He has been particularly effective in overseas conditions and has also captained India in Test cricket on occasion, including a Test against England at Edgbaston in 2022.
Bowling style and significance
Bumrah's action features a short run-up, a hyper-extended bowling arm and a low front-on delivery, which gives the ball a steep, awkward trajectory for batters. His stock deliveries include the inswinging yorker, the well-disguised slower ball and a sharp bouncer. He is among the few bowlers in the modern era to be ranked at or near the top of the ICC bowling rankings across all three international formats.
His emergence is often cited as part of a broader rise of Indian fast bowling in the late 2010s and 2020s, alongside contemporaries such as Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj.
Personal life
In March 2021, Bumrah married television presenter Sanjana Ganesan. The couple's son was born in 2023.
