Background
Madhepura is a district headquarters in the Kosi region of Bihar. Historically, residents of Madhepura and surrounding districts such as Saharsa, Supaul, Araria and Purnia depended on medical facilities in Patna, Bhagalpur or Darbhanga for advanced treatment. The establishment of a medical college in Madhepura was intended to address this gap by providing both a teaching institution and tertiary-level healthcare in the region.
The college follows the standard model of government medical colleges in Bihar, offering the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme, supported by an attached hospital that serves as a clinical training site as well as a referral centre for the local population.
Academics and hospital
As a teaching institution, JNKTMCH provides instruction in the standard pre-clinical, para-clinical and clinical disciplines required for the MBBS curriculum, including anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, forensic medicine, community medicine, medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, paediatrics, and allied specialities.
The attached hospital functions as the clinical wing of the college, offering outpatient and inpatient services, emergency care, and diagnostic facilities for patients drawn primarily from Madhepura and adjoining districts.
Significance
The college is significant for the Kosi region as it contributes to:
- Improved access to tertiary healthcare in a historically under-served part of Bihar.
- Local availability of medical education, reducing the need for aspirants from the region to migrate elsewhere for MBBS training.
- Commemoration of Karpoori Thakur, a prominent socialist leader from Bihar associated with policies promoting social justice and welfare.
