Jangipur district

Overview

Jangipur district is a proposed district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is intended to be carved out of the existing Murshidabad district, with the town of Jangipur envisaged as its headquarters. The proposal forms part of a broader administrative reorganisation announced by the Government of West Bengal aimed at creating smaller, more manageable districts to improve governance and the delivery of public services.

Background

Murshidabad is among the more populous districts of West Bengal, and successive demands have been made to subdivide it for administrative convenience. The Jangipur area, situated in the northern part of Murshidabad along the river Bhagirathi, already functions as a distinct subdivision and is the seat of the Jangipur Lok Sabha constituency. The region is known for its silk weaving industry, particularly around Raghunathganj and surrounding blocks, and for its bidi manufacturing economy.

Proposal

In 2022, the Government of West Bengal announced plans to create several new districts by reorganising existing ones. Among the proposals, Murshidabad was to be divided, with Jangipur and Berhampore areas considered for separate district status alongside the residual Murshidabad district. The proposed Jangipur district would primarily comprise the Jangipur subdivision and adjoining areas in the northern part of the parent district.

Geography

The proposed district lies in the northern part of Murshidabad, bordered by Malda district to the north and the state of Jharkhand to the west. The Bhagirathi, a distributary of the Ganges, flows through the region and shapes its agricultural landscape. The terrain is largely alluvial plain, supporting paddy, jute, and mulberry cultivation.

Administration

As of its proposal stage, the area continues to be administered as part of Murshidabad district. The existing Jangipur subdivision includes blocks such as Raghunathganj I and II, Suti I and II, Sagardighi, and Lalgola, which would form the core of any new district unit if formally constituted.

Significance

The creation of a Jangipur district would reduce the administrative load on Murshidabad and bring district-level offices closer to residents in the northern parts of the region. The area has historical importance, lying near sites associated with the late Mughal and early British administrative history of Bengal, and is economically significant for its handloom silk and bidi-rolling industries.
