Jananayak Chandrashekhar University

Jananayak Chandrashekhar University (JNCU) is a state public university located in Ballia, in the eastern part of the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The university is named in honour of Chandra Shekhar, the eighth Prime Minister of India, who hailed from Ibrahimpatti village in Ballia district and was popularly known as Jananayak ("people's leader").

Background

Ballia district, situated at the confluence of the Ganges and Ghaghara rivers along the eastern edge of Uttar Pradesh, has a long tradition in Indian public life and freedom-era politics. Before the establishment of JNCU, degree colleges in the district were affiliated to other universities in the region, which prompted long-standing demand for a dedicated university in Ballia.

The university was created by the Government of Uttar Pradesh as an affiliating state university to take over the academic affiliation of degree and postgraduate colleges located in Ballia district, thereby decentralising higher education administration in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

As an affiliating university, JNCU oversees curriculum, examinations, and the awarding of degrees for colleges within its territorial jurisdiction.
