The terrain is largely semi-arid, and the area falls within the rain-shadow region east of the Western Ghats. The city is situated to the east of Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad), which is the divisional headquarters.
Administration
Jalna is the headquarters of Jalna district, one of the eight districts of the Marathwada region. The urban area is governed by the Jalna Municipal Council, while the surrounding rural areas come under the Jalna Zilla Parishad. The district is further divided into tahsils, with Jalna tahsil containing the city itself.
History
Jalna has been a settled town for centuries and was historically part of the Nizam's Hyderabad State before the integration of Hyderabad with the Indian Union in 1948. After the States Reorganisation Act of 1956, the Marathwada region, including Jalna, was merged with the bilingual Bombay State. With the formation of Maharashtra on 1 May 1960, Jalna became part of the new state. Jalna district was carved out of the erstwhile Aurangabad district on 1 May 1981, with Jalna city as its headquarters.
Economy
Jalna is recognised as one of the principal hubs of the seed industry in India, hosting the operations of several major seed companies. Other significant economic activities include:
- Steel re-rolling mills and the manufacture of TMT bars
- Agricultural trade, especially in mosambi (sweet lime), pulses, and bidi tobacco
- Cotton ginning and pressing
- Dal mills and food processing units
The city has been notified for industrial development through Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) estates, and a dry port has been planned in the region to support exports from the Marathwada belt.
Transport
Jalna is connected by road and rail to other parts of Maharashtra and India. The Jalna Junction railway station lies on the South Central Railway's Secunderabad–Manmad line. National and state highways link the city with Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Parbhani, and Nanded. The nearest major airport is at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Demographics and culture
The population of Jalna is linguistically and religiously mixed, with Marathi-speaking Hindus forming the majority and significant Muslim and other communities contributing to the city's cultural fabric. The Marathwada literary and saint tradition, associated with figures such as Sant Dnyaneshwar and Sant Eknath in the wider region, influences cultural life. Festivals such as Ganesh Chaturthi, Eid, Diwali, and the local jatras of village deities are widely observed.
Education
Jalna hosts colleges affiliated to Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, based in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Institutions in the city offer courses in arts, commerce, science, engineering, and pharmacy, alongside vocational and industrial training programmes.
Significance
Jalna's significance lies in its role as an administrative, agricultural, and industrial centre for north-central Marathwada. Its concentration of seed-producing companies has given it a notable place in Indian agribusiness, while its steel industry contributes to the regional manufacturing base.
