Geography

Jainagar is located in the northern part of Madhubani district on the alluvial plains of north Bihar. The town sits on the southern bank of the Kamala river, which originates in the Mahabharat range of Nepal and flows southward through the region. The terrain is flat and forms part of the wider Ganges–Kamala basin, supporting paddy and other field crops.

The town adjoins the Nepalese town of Inarwa across the border, with the boundary lying immediately to the north of the settlement.

Transport

Jainagar is well known as a railway terminus on the Indian Railways network. Jaynagar railway station is operated by the East Central Railway zone and is a major originating station for trains running into Bihar and onwards. Historically, a metre-gauge line extended from Jaynagar across the border to Janakpur and Bijalpura in Nepal; this section was rebuilt as a broad-gauge cross-border railway, and a passenger service between Jaynagar and Kurtha (and later extended towards Bijalpura) in Nepal commenced operations as the Jaynagar–Janakpur–Bardibas line.

By road, Jainagar is connected to Madhubani town, Darbhanga and other parts of north Bihar, and serves as a customs and immigration check post for movement between India and Nepal.

Administration

Civic affairs in the town are managed by the Jainagar Nagar Parishad. For revenue and general administration, Jainagar is part of Madhubani district, which falls under the Darbhanga division of Bihar. The town also serves as the headquarters of the Jainagar block, one of the community development blocks of the district.

Culture and significance

Jainagar lies in the heartland of Mithila and shares cultural traditions with the wider Maithili-speaking region, including Maithili language, Madhubani painting, and festivals such as Chhath, Sama-Chakeva and Vivaha Panchami. Its proximity to Janakpur in Nepal, traditionally identified with the kingdom of King Janaka and the birthplace of Sita, gives the town religious significance for pilgrims travelling from India during major Mithila festivals, particularly the Vivaha Panchami procession associated with the marriage of Rama and Sita.

The town also functions as a cross-border trading point for agricultural produce, consumer goods and daily necessities exchanged between residents of the Indian and Nepalese sides of the Mithila plains.
