Geography

Jagadhri is situated in the Indo-Gangetic plain, on the western side of the river Yamuna, which forms the boundary between Haryana and Uttar Pradesh in this region. The Western Yamuna Canal, a major irrigation channel taken off from the Yamuna at nearby Hathnikund, passes through the area and has long supported agriculture and small-scale industry. The terrain is generally flat and alluvial, with the Shivalik foothills lying to the north.

Background and history

Jagadhri is an old market town in the historical region between the Yamuna and the Sutlej. The area around it includes a number of archaeological and historical sites, most notably the ancient mound of Sugh (Sugh Tibba), identified by scholars with Srughna, a town mentioned by the seventh-century Chinese pilgrim Xuanzang. The wider region was successively under the control of various north Indian powers, including the Mughals and, in the eighteenth century, the Sikh misls of the Cis-Sutlej states, before passing to the British.

Under British rule, Jagadhri was a tahsil headquarters in the Ambala district of Punjab. After the reorganisation of Punjab in 1966, it became part of the new state of Haryana. With the creation of Yamunanagar district on 1 November 1989, Jagadhri was incorporated into the new district along with the planned industrial town of Yamunanagar.

Economy

Jagadhri has historically been known for its metalware industry, particularly the manufacture of brass and bell-metal utensils, an artisanal craft that has been associated with the town for generations. The combined Jagadhri–Yamunanagar urban area is one of the more significant industrial clusters in Haryana, with activity in plywood and timber processing, paper, sugar, metal utensils, and engineering goods. The presence of the Western Yamuna Canal and proximity to forested catchments in the Shivaliks have historically supported timber-based industries in the region.

Transport

Jagadhri is served by the Indian Railways, with Jagadhri Workshop and the nearby Yamunanagar–Jagadhri railway station lying on routes connecting Delhi and Ambala with Saharanpur. The Northern Railway operates a major rolling-stock workshop at Jagadhri, which has been an important employer in the city. Road links connect Jagadhri to Yamunanagar, Ambala, Saharanpur, Karnal and Chandigarh through national and state highways.

Civic administration

Local civic affairs in Jagadhri are administered through a municipal council under the Haryana Municipal Act, with Yamunanagar functioning under a separate municipal arrangement that has at times been merged with Jagadhri. The city falls within the Yamunanagar parliamentary constituency for elections to the Lok Sabha and is part of the legislative assembly constituencies of Haryana covering the district.

Significance

Jagadhri's significance lies in its role as a long-established trading and craft town in north-eastern Haryana, its association with the historical site of Sugh/Srughna, and its position within one of the state's principal industrial belts. Together with Yamunanagar, it forms a regional centre for trade, education and administration in the upper Yamuna region.
