Overview
Jadavpur University (abbreviated JU) is a public state-funded technical and research university with its main campus located at Jadavpur in Kolkata, West Bengal. The institution traces its origin to the Bengal Technical Institute, which was established on 25 July 1906, and was subsequently converted into Jadavpur University on 24 December 1955.
The university offers programmes across engineering, the arts and the sciences, and is regarded as one of the prominent centres for technical education and research in India. It has been recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC) as an institute with "Potential for Excellence" and has been accredited with an "A+" grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).
According to the 2025 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Jadavpur University was placed 9th among universities, 1st among state public universities, 18th among engineering institutes, and 18th overall in India. The Nature Index (2023–2024) ranked it 1st among universities in India and 22nd overall in the country in terms of research output.
