The family later relocated to Sri Lanka, where Jacqueline grew up. She studied mass communication at the University of Sydney in Australia and briefly worked as a television reporter in Sri Lanka.

In 2006, she won the Miss Universe Sri Lanka pageant and represented her country at the Miss Universe contest held in Los Angeles that year. She subsequently shifted to modelling, which led her to India.

Film Career

Debut and early work (2009–2013)

Fernandez made her Hindi film debut with Sujoy Ghosh's fantasy adventure Aladin (2009), opposite Riteish Deshmukh and Amitabh Bachchan. She followed this with Jaane Kahan Se Aayi Hai (2010) and a supporting role in Mohit Suri's Murder 2 (2011), which became her first major commercial success.

Her performance in Sajid Khan's ensemble comedy Housefull 2 (2012) helped establish her in the mainstream, and she received the Stardust Award for Breakthrough Performance for Murder 2. The Telugu remake-inspired action film Race 2 (2013), directed by Abbas–Mustan, was another box office hit and earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut.

Mainstream stardom (2014–2019)

Fernandez appeared in Kick (2014) opposite Salman Khan, one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of that year. She continued with Roy (2015), Brothers (2015), and Housefull 3 (2016). In 2016 she also performed an item number, "Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan", in Roy, which became widely popular.

She starred in Dishoom (2016), A Gentleman (2017) opposite Sidharth Malhotra, Judwaa 2 (2017) with Varun Dhawan, and the multi-starrer action thriller Race 3 (2018). Her dance-oriented roles and screen presence in songs led to her being frequently described as one of Bollywood's leading dancing heroines.

Recent work (2020–present)

Fernandez featured in Mrs. Serial Killer (2020), a Netflix original film, and the comedies Bhoot Police (2021) and Bachchhan Paandey (2022). Fernandez launched a charitable organisation, the YOLO Foundation, focused on the welfare of underprivileged people and animal protection. She has endorsed numerous consumer brands in India and is active in fitness and lifestyle ventures, including a fitness initiative called Just F.

Significance

Fernandez is among the most prominent foreign-born actresses to have built a sustained career in Hindi cinema, alongside contemporaries such as Katrina Kaif and Nargis Fakhri. Her rise from the Miss Universe Sri Lanka pageant to leading roles in major Bollywood productions is often cited as an example of the Hindi film industry's increasing openness to performers from across South Asia.
