Domestic career
Kishan made his first-class debut for Jharkhand in the 2014–15 Ranji Trophy season as a teenager, becoming one of the youngest debutants for the state. He has since featured for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy, the Vijay Hazare Trophy (List A), and the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20).
Indian Premier League
Kishan was first picked up by the Gujarat Lions in the IPL, where he played in 2016 and 2017. From the 2018 season onwards he has played for the Mumbai Indians, having been bought back by the franchise at the 2018 IPL auction. With Mumbai Indians, he was part of squads that won the IPL title in 2019 and 2020. Ahead of the 2022 mega auction, he was retained by Mumbai Indians for a sum that was among the highest paid in that auction cycle.
International career
Kishan made his Twenty20 International debut for India in 2021. He marked his T20I debut with a notable half-century. He made his One Day International debut shortly afterwards in 2021. In December 2022, during a bilateral series against Bangladesh, Kishan scored a double century in an ODI in Chattogram, becoming the youngest batter and the fastest in terms of balls faced to reach 200 in the format at that time.
He made his Test debut for India in 2023 during the tour of the West Indies, scoring a half-century on debut.
Playing style
Kishan is known as an aggressive top-order left-hander capable of striking at a high tempo in the white-ball formats. He keeps wicket in domestic cricket and has occasionally taken up wicket-keeping duties at the international level.
Significance
Kishan's rise from age-group captaincy to the senior India team mirrors the wider pathway provided by the BCCI's domestic and Under-19 structures. His ODI double-century placed him among a small group of Indian batters to have crossed 200 in the format, alongside Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, and Shubman Gill.
