Overview

Ishaan Khatter (born 1 November 1995) is an Indian actor who works primarily in Hindi cinema and has also appeared in international streaming productions. He came to prominence with his leading role in Majid Majidi's Beyond the Clouds (2017), for which he received the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut, and has since worked across Indian films, British and American miniseries, and Indian streaming drama.

Background

Khatter is the son of actor Rajesh Khattar and actor-dancer Neelima Azeem. Through his mother's earlier marriage to Pankaj Kapur, he is the younger half-brother of actor Shahid Kapoor. His first appearance on screen came as a child in the 2005 Hindi film Vaah! Life Ho Toh Aisi!, in which Shahid Kapoor played a leading role.

Career

Film debut and early work

Khatter's first leading role came in the Iranian-Indian drama Beyond the Clouds (2017), directed by Majid Majidi, in which he played a young drug dealer in Mumbai. The performance earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut.

Commercial breakthrough

His first commercial success was the romantic drama Dhadak (2018), a Hindi adaptation of the Marathi film Sairat, in which he was paired opposite Janhvi Kapoor in her debut.

Television and streaming

Khatter expanded into long-form streaming work with the BBC miniseries A Suitable Boy (2020), based on Vikram Seth's novel and directed by Mira Nair. He subsequently appeared in the American miniseries The Perfect Couple (2024) and headlined the Indian romantic drama series The Royals (2025).

Recent work

In 2025, his performance as a Muslim man navigating religious discrimination in Homebound drew critical acclaim. The same year, he was featured in Forbes Asia's 30 Under 30 list.
