Overview

Inderbir Singh "Ish" Sodhi (born 31 October 1992) is a New Zealand cricketer who represents the New Zealand national cricket team across all formats, and Canterbury in domestic cricket. A right-arm leg spinner who bats right-handed, Sodhi is among the leading wrist spinners produced by New Zealand and has had particular success in the Twenty20 International (T20I) format.

Background

Sodhi is of Indian Punjabi heritage and represents New Zealand internationally. He bowls right-arm leg break and is used primarily as a specialist spinner in both red-ball and white-ball cricket.

Career

Domestic cricket

At the domestic level, Sodhi plays for Canterbury in New Zealand's first-class and limited-overs competitions.

International cricket

Sodhi represents New Zealand in Test, One Day International and Twenty20 International cricket. In January 2018, he reached the No. 1 position in the ICC rankings for T20I bowlers, having moved up from No. 10 at the end of the previous year.

He was part of the New Zealand squad that finished as runners-up at the 2019 Cricket World Cup, held in England and Wales.

Significance

Sodhi is one of the few New Zealand spinners to have topped the ICC T20I bowling rankings. His role as a wrist spinner has given New Zealand an attacking option in the shorter formats, where leg spin has become an increasingly important tactical resource.
