Overview

IIIT Hyderabad focuses on technology education and applied research, particularly in areas relating to computer science, electronics and communications, computational sciences, and their applications. The institute is structured around research centres rather than traditional departments alone, with faculty and students participating in interdisciplinary projects across engineering, the natural sciences, and the humanities.

Background and establishment

The institute was set up by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in collaboration with industry partners, with the aim of creating a centre of excellence in information technology education and research. It began functioning in 1998, with Rajeev Sangal serving as its founding director. Following the bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, the institute came under the state of Telangana while continuing to operate as an autonomous deemed university.

IIIT Hyderabad served as a model for the public-private partnership IIITs that the Government of India later promoted, and is distinct from the Indian Institutes of Information Technology established by Act of Parliament in 2014.

Academics

The institute offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes. Common degree streams include the Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in disciplines such as Computer Science and Engineering and Electronics and Communication Engineering, dual-degree (B.Tech.–MS by Research) programmes, Master of Science by Research, Master of Technology, and Doctor of Philosophy.

Admission to undergraduate programmes is primarily through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main), with additional channels for students admitted on the basis of academic merit and competitive examinations such as the olympiads. Postgraduate admissions involve research-based selection processes including written tests and interviews.

Research centres

Research at IIIT Hyderabad is organised through a number of centres, including those working on:

  • Visual information technology and computer vision
  • Language technologies and natural language processing
  • Robotics
  • Data engineering and data sciences
  • VLSI and embedded systems
  • Computational natural sciences and bioinformatics
  • Security, theory, and algorithms
  • IT in building science, urban informatics, and smart cities

Campus

The campus is situated in the Gachibowli area of Hyderabad, adjacent to the University of Hyderabad and within the city's information technology corridor. The location places the institute near several major IT companies, research organisations, and educational institutions, supporting industry collaboration and student internships.

Significance

IIIT Hyderabad is regarded as one of India's leading institutions for computer science and allied research, and is frequently cited for its emphasis on undergraduate research participation, industry-linked technology development, and entrepreneurship. The institute hosts a technology business incubator that has supported a number of start-ups in software, deep technology, and language computing.
