Background

Intas Pharmaceuticals, the parent organisation, is a privately held company with a presence in formulations, active pharmaceutical ingredients and biologics. The biopharmaceuticals division was set up to extend the group's capabilities beyond small-molecule generics into recombinant protein therapeutics, an area in which India has progressively built domestic manufacturing capacity.

Activities

Intas Biopharmaceuticals operates research and manufacturing facilities for the development of biosimilar versions of biologic drugs. Its therapy areas have included oncology, nephrology, and supportive care, with products in classes such as granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (G-CSF), erythropoietin and monoclonal antibodies.

The division undertakes process development, fermentation and cell-culture-based production, purification, formulation and fill-finish operations for biologic products. Output is supplied to the Indian market and to a number of international markets through Intas's global distribution network, which spans regulated and emerging geographies.

Significance

The growth of Intas Biopharmaceuticals reflects a broader trend in the Indian pharmaceutical industry, in which several established generics manufacturers have built dedicated biologics units to participate in the global biosimilars market. As part of the Intas group, the division contributes to India's positioning as a major exporter of affordable biologic medicines.
