Alongside patient care, the institute conducts academic and research programmes in liver and biliary sciences.
Academic role
The institute offers postgraduate and post-doctoral training programmes in hepatology and related disciplines, including DM, MD, MCh, PhD, and fellowship courses, intended to develop specialised clinicians and researchers in liver diseases. ILBS also conducts research on viral hepatitis, cirrhosis, liver failure, and transplantation medicine.
Significance
As one of the few stand-alone institutes in India focused exclusively on hepatobiliary medicine, ILBS plays a significant role in addressing the burden of liver disease in the country, particularly chronic hepatitis B and C, alcohol-related liver disease, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It serves as a referral centre for complex cases requiring advanced hepatology and transplant care.
